Walter was born at Arnold in 1887, and was the son of James a framework knitter and Eliza Anthony née Marshall of St Albans Villa, Front Street, Arnold, Nottingham. His father was born in 1842 in Arnold and his mother Eliza was born in 1847 in Woodborough , they were married in Nottingham in 1866 and went on to have a very large family of 9 children, the children were ; - James b1868, Lucy b1870, Herbert b1873, Alfred b1876, Samuel b1877, Joseph b1881, Frederick William 1883, Walter b1885 and Charles b1890, all the children were born in Arnold In the 1911 Cencus his family are shown living at Levertons Row, Arnold, and are shown as :- James 69 yrs a framework knitter, he is living with his wife Eliza 66 yrs and four of their sons, Samuel 34 yrs single a general labourer, Frederick 28 yrs single a window cleaner, Walter single 26 yrs of age a colliery labourer and Charles 21 yrs also a colliery labourer. Also in the 1911 census we find the following children who have left the family home, Joseph 30 yrs now married to Mary Ann (married 6 yrs ) and has 4 children and is living on Levertons Row, Arnold. James 43 yrs married to Annie (married 13 yrs ) and has 5 children and is living on Front Street, Arnold and is a fish salesman and grocer Hebert 38 yrs married to Kate (married 18 yrs) and has 9 children and is living at 16 Gedling Grove, Arnold and is a hosiery hand. Alfred 35 yrs married to Emma (married 5 yrs ) has 5 children and is living at Sanders Yard, Arnold and is a building labourer Lucy now 41 yrs , unable to trace her on the 1911 census. Following Walters death his father James submitted a form to the army giving details of the deceased living next of kin (Form 5080) in which he states both his parents, seven of his brothers were still living as was his one sister, the form was submitted on 13th May 1919,when James was living at St Albans Villa, Front Street, Arnold Eliza Anthony died in 1915 aged 70 yrs and James Anthony died in 1925 aged 83 yrs
He enlisted into the 1/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters at Newark on 31st August 1914. On his attestation papers he gives his age as 27 years and his address as Leverton Row, Front Street, Arnold. His next of kin is his father James Anthony of St Albans Vilas, Front Street, Arnold. He is a banksman employed by the Gedling Coal Company. He further states that he has had previous service in the Army in 8th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters. He went into training with the battalion at Watford, Luton and Braintree before embarking from Southampton on the 2nd March on board the “King Edward” landing at Havre at 4.50am on the 3rd March. He was with the battalion in the trenches at Kemmel between April and June 1915, and continued to serve in the Ypres Salient until on the 14th October 1915 the 46th Division attacked the strong German position known as The Hohenzollern Redoubt. Walter was in this attack and he was one of a party of 50 men taken forward by Capt C. G. Vickers moving up to a barricade in a trench which Captain Vickers proceeded to hold throwing bombs at the enemy which were passed to him by his men, including Walter. Captain C. G. Vickers was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions this day and it is fair to say that Walter played some small but vital part in the action however he was killed in action at this time. He was buried in the Arras Road, Cemetery, France
