Family History

Walter was born in 1893 the son of Henry a market gardener and Edith Mary Powell (née Pattison ). Henry was born in 1858 in Rugby and Edith in 1861 in Kingsdown Devon. Married in 1885 at Dover, they had six children one dying in infancy. The surviving children were Leonard W (b.1886) Arthur H (b. 1887) Edith C (b. 1889) Walter D (b. 1893 ) all born in Monmouth and Avery Ernest (b.1894 Spalding).By the time of the 1901 census the family had settled in Car Colston and were living at The Nurseries, where Henry was a market gardener , he lived at the nurseries with his wife Edith and their children :- Leonard, Arthur, Edith, Walter and Avery. In 1911 they were still living at Car Colston.

Military History

Private Walter Douglas Powell, enlisted at Grantham and served with the 7th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. whilst serving with 6th battalion he was wounded at Gallipoli, He was killed in action on 3rd July 1916. He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

Extra Information

His brother Avery Ernest also enlisted. Prior to the war he had been working as a chauffeur for F Mitchell Motor Engineers of Nottingham. As a result he became a driver in the Army Service Corps serving in Egypt and also in France and Flanders. He survived the war and died in 1970 aged 76.
