James William Wilson was the son of William James Wilson and Sarah Ann Shaw who married at Nottingham in 1889. Their five children were: Edward Ernest (b.1890), Nellie Beatrice (b.1893), James William (b.1896), Maude Gertrude Harriett (b.1899) and Cyril (b.1904). The Wilson family lived at: 14 Coleridge Street, Radford [c.1891]; 20 Ortzen Street, All Saints Parish, Nottingham [c.1901]; 65 Garfield Road, Radford [c.1911]. When his parents placed a death notice in the local newspaper for Private Wilson the address they gave was still 65 Garfield Road, Radford [n.e.p.21.11.1916]. William James Wilson, who was a Leivers lace draughtsman, died at Nottingham in 1920, aged 54. Sarah Ann Wilson died in Nottingham, aged 82, in 1949.
Private James William Wilson, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment (Welbeck Rangers), he died of wounds on 10th November 1916. He is buried in Puchevillers British Cemetery, Somme, France.
Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged), 21 November 1916: 'Wilson. Died of wounds November 10th 1916, Private James W Wilson, Sherwood Foresters, second son of Mr and Mrs WJ Wilson, 65 Garfield Road, Radford, age 20. Mother father, brother Ted, sister Maud, brother Cyril, sister Nellie.' 'In memoriam' published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 10th November 1917:- 'WILSON. – In loving memory of our dear son, James William Wilson, died November 10th, 1916, from wounds received on the Somme. He answered his country's call for freedom and honour. Grief only aching hearts can know how bitter is the loss. – From mother, father, Ted (with the colours), Maude, Cyril, Nellie, and Will at Doncaster.'
