George Henry Williams was the son of John Thomas Williams and Sarah Derbyshire who married at Radford St Peter’s Church in March 1883. Their three children were: George Henry (b.1884), Alice (b.1885) and Elizabeth (b.1890). The Williams family lived at: 17 Hamburgh Road, Nottingham [C.1891]; 4 Lilac Street, St Ann’s [C.1901]; 6 Folly Cottages, New Road, Old Radford [C.1911]. Sarah Williams died at Nottingham, aged 53, in 1913. Her husband, John Thomas, who was employed at Radford colliery as a horseman in their stables, died at Nottingham either in 1933, aged 73, or in 1942, aged 83. In 1907 George Williams married Emma Seymour at Nottingham. In 1911 they were living at 5 Radford Grove Lane, Radford. The census indicated that they had had a child but it had died. There would be one further child: George H. (b.1911). A death notice for Private Williams placed in the local paper by his widow gave her address as 209 Birkin Avenue, Hyson Green [n.e.p.19.12.1917]. What subsequently happened to her is unclear.
He enlisted at Nottingham; killed in action; as his body was not recovered his name was added to the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, Nord, France.
Nottingham Post notice (abridged) 19 December 1917: 'Williams. Killed in action November 27th Private George Williamson, age 33, Duke of Wellington's, husband of Emma Williams, 209 Birkin Avenue. Wife and child.' In memoriam published 27th November 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WILLIAMS. – In loving memory of Pte. George Williams, killed in action November 27th, 1917, dearly loved only son of John Williams, Radford Colliery, and the late Sarah Williams. What would we give to clasp your hand and bid you welcome home. – From loving father, sisters Cissie and Lizzie and brothers-in-law, and his dearly loved son George. “WILLIAMS. – Killed in action November 27th, 1917, Pte. G. Williams, Duke of Wellington.
