William Sharpe was born in 1897 at Nottingham and was the son of Herbert a general labourer and Ada Sharpe née Tomlinson of 5 Main Yard, Denman Street, Radford. His father Herbert was born in 1873 at Nottingham, his mother Ada Tomlinson was born in 1872 at Sutton in Ashfield they were married in 1893 at Nottingham, they went on to have 6 children, sadly 3 died in infancy or earle childhood, their surviving children were William b1897, Nellie b1900 and Annie b1903 all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 7 Charter Street, Nottingham and are shown as Herbert 38 yrs a general labourer, he is living with his wife Ada 39 yrs and their children, William 14 yrs no occupation listed, Nellie 11 yrs and Annie 8 yrs of age.
William Sharpe had served with the battalion on Gallipoli and in Egypt. On 1 July 1916 they moved to France and the Arras front. In August they moved to the Somme and prepared for the Battle of Thiepval. The battalions time in the front line from 6th to 12th September was described as 'lively. The war diary showed that one officer and four other ranks were killed on 8 September 1916. Throughout the period in the trenches the battalion was plagued by enemy artillery and during the day William was killed. He is buried at Ovillers Military Cemetery, I. In memoriam published 'Nottingham Evening Post,' 8th September 1917:- “SHARPE. – In memory of Private W. Sharpe, late of Charter-street, killed in action September 8th, 1916.
