Family History

Joseph Alfred Read was the son of Charles Read and Ann Dunn who married in the Radford registration district in 1870. Their children included; George William (b.1870), Charles (b.1871), Annie (b.1874), William (b.1876), Lily (b.1878), Edward (b.1880), Maud (b.1882), Harold (b.1884), Joseph Alfred (b.1888) and Frank Herbert (b.1894). The Reads lived at: 7 Cross Cut, Lenton/Radford [C.1881];16 Trafalgar Road, Radford [C.1891]; not listed [C.1901; 95 Trafalgar Street, Radford [C.1911]. Charles Read, who worked as a joiner, died at Nottingham, aged 86, in 1936. His wife, Ann, predeceased him dying in Nottingham, aged 62, in 1911. Joseph Alfred Read married Lilian Loveday Kirk at St Mary’s Church in 1915. His widow subsequently married Edward Charles Burnham at Nottingham in 1918. Lilian Loveday Burnham was living at 47 Robinswood Road, Aspley, Nottingham at the time of her death in January 1970. She was aged 80.

Military History

He enlisted at Nottingham; initially reported missing death now confirmed [n.e.p.17.8.1916]; as his body was not recovered his name was added to the Helles Memorial, Turkey.

Nottingham St Mary, Banns of marriage 7, 14 and 21 March 1915: 'Joseph Alfred Read, soldier, bachelor age 26, 4 Fisher Gate, and Lilian Loveday Kirk, spinster age 24, of 4 Fisher Gate.' 4 Fisher Gate given in other banns as address of one or both parties so possibly an 'accommodation address'.
