Leonard Palmer

Leonard Palmer born 8th April 1880 was the son of Herbert James Palmer and Emma Ward who married at Nottingham in 1880. Their children included: Emma (b.1880/d.1882), Florence (b.1884), Leonard (b.1888), Minnie (b.1890), Beatrice (1894) and William James (b.1896). There was another child, Alice, born in 1879 before her parents married, but it is not clear what subsequently happened to her. The Palmer family lived at: 1 Osberton Street, Basford [C.1881]; 54 Randal Street, Hyson Green [C.1891]; 24 Nutthall Road, Bobbersmill [C.1901, C.1911 & n.e.p.26.4.1918]. Herbert James Palmer, a baker who employed his two sons in his own business, died at Nottingham, aged 56, in 1916. Army records for 1921 gave Emma Palmer’s address as 10 Wordsworth Road, Radford. She died at Nottingham in 1927, aged 68. On 11 September 1913 Leonard Palmer married Alice Ermyntrude Perkins at St Stephen's Church, Hyson Green. They had two sons: Leonard James (b.17th August 1914) and Leslie Arthur (b.22nd December 1916). The family lived at 26 Berridge Avenue, Berridge Road, Hyson Green [Army records/1915]; 22 Nuttall Road Bobbersmill [Army records/1917]. This latter address was also the one given in Leonard Palmer’s death notice in the local newspaper [n.e.p.26.4.1918]. His widow later moved to 4 Wyvil Terrace, Paton Street, Hyson Green [Army records/1920 & 1921]. In 1922 Alice E. Palmer married Noah Stapleton at Nottingham. The address given for the couple in CWGC records was 174 Sherwood Street, Nottingham. Alice Ermyntrude Palmer died at Nottingham, aged 86, in 1975. Leonard's brother, William James, served with the 1st/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (71252 Private) and was killed in action on 6 December 1917 aged 21 (Philosophe British Cemetery). Their sister, Florence, married Joseph Ward and died on 26 December 1949.
