Family History

Joseph Hunt was born in 1889 and was the son of Joseph Hunt and Louisa Williams who married in the Radford Registration district in 1877. Their children included: Mary Ann (b.1878), Sarah (b.1879), Samuel (b.1880), Alice (b.1882), Alfred (b.1884), Ellen (b.1888), Joseph (b.1889), Louisa (b1891), and Elizabeth (1894). The family lived at: 14 Truswell’s Yard, Ilkeston Road, Radford [C.1881]; 9 Three Tuns Yard Ilkeston Road, Radford [C.1891 & C.1901]; 503 Ilkeston Road, Radford [Army records/undated]. Louisa Hunt died at Nottingham in 1900, aged 44. Her husband, Joseph, who worked as a lacemaker, died at Nottingham in 1909, aged 51. In 1910 Joseph Hunt married Jessie Sharpe at Nottingham they lived at 11 Dulwich Road, Radford, they had the following children, Joseph born 1911, Jessie born 1913 and Cyril born 1916. At the time of the 1911 census they were living at 42 St Peter’s Street, Radford Joseph is shown as being 21 yrs of age and a jacquard card examiner he is living with his wife Jessie Hunt 20 yrs The only subsequent address we have for Jessie Hunt is 11 Dulwich Street Old Radford [Army records/1915 &1919] which appears on his brother, Samuel’s army papers. His widow Jessie was awarded a pension of 29 shillings and 7 pence a week which commenced on 2nd September 1918 Jessie Hunt died at Nottingham, aged 29, in 1921.

Military History

Enlisted in Nottingham; initially served in the Royal Army Service Corps [Service No.M/287853]; killed in action 23 September 1917; as his body was not recovered his name was recorded on the Cambrai Memorial Louverval, Nord, France. Additional Information: His brother, Private Samuel Hunt, of the 2nd Bn. Sherwood Foresters died of his wounds 30 April 1915.
