Ernest Alfred Hoare was the son of Joseph Hoare and Emily Dewey who married at Nottingham in 1885. Their children included: Ernest Alfred (b.1886) and Louisa Alice (b.1888). The two children were staying with their maternal grandparents, Matthew and Sarah Dewey at the time of the 1891 census. Their address was 7 Ossington Street, Radford. There is no record of where Joseph and Emily Hoare were living in this or any other census. What happened to them is not clear. Ernest Alfred stated his father was dead when he signed on as a regular soldier in 1908. The Army records stated that his next of kin was his sister [Mrs Louisa A. Straw], who lived at 6 Navarino Terrace, Brixton Road, Old Radford in 1916 [Army records]. She died, aged 31, in 1918 and so it was her daughter (Ernest Alfred’s niece) who became his next of kin in later documents.
Hoare had initially joined the 3rd [Territorials] Bn Sherwood Foresters on 21 December 1905 before signing on as a regular soldier with the Sherwood Foresters at Nottingham on 21 December 1908; in 1911 he was out in India serving with 1st Bn Sherwood Foresters; he suffered a gunshot wound to left side of his chest on 7 January 1915 and was subsequently sent back to England aboard the H.S. Carisbrooke Castle on 19 January 1915; he returned to France on 1 June 1916; killed in action; as his body was not recovered his name was added to the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
