William Grainger was the son of Henry Grainger and Alice Kenderdine who married at Stafford in 1878. Their children included: Charles Henry (b.1878), Joseph Thomas (b.1880), Prudence Alice (b.1881), Harry (b.1883), Ellen (b.1886), William (b.1888) and Lizzie (b.1891). In 1881 the Graingers were living in Carter Street, Uttoxoter but by 1891 they had moved back to Stafford where they lived at 13 Lammascote Road. In 1900 Henry Grainger, who worked as a groom, died at Stafford aged 43. So early 1901 saw Alice Grainger marry Charles Alfred Waters at Nottingham. The Grainger children can all be found under the surname Waters living at 108 Vernon Road, Old Basford in the 1901 census. In 1910 William Grainger married Edith Ellis at Nottingham. The couple plus their first child, Charles William (b.1910), were all listed as visitors staying with Charles Alfred & Alice Walters at 13 Peveril Street, Nottingham in the 1911 census. In William Grainger’s death notice in the local newspaper it was stated that his mother was now living in Northampton [n.e.p.12.10.1916]. The CWGC gave a later address for her of 18 Smallman Street, Stafford. She died aged 82, in 1942 while living at 66 Fairway Stafford. Her second husband, Charles Alfred Waters, had predeceased her, dying at Stafford in 1927, aged 66. William and Edith Grainger had two further children: Alice (b.1912) and Gertrude A. (b.1915). They lived at 21 Osborne Terrace, Radford [n.e.p.23.10.1916]. His widow does not appear to have remarried and, if this is the case, Edith Grainger was living 9 Ilkeston Road Trowell when she died aged 79 in September 1967.
