Walter Henry Grainger was the son of Joshua Grainger and Maria Orange who married in the Basford Registration District in 1869. Their children included: Jack (b.1870), Samuel (b.1872), George William (b.1876), Mary Elizabeth (b.1878), Joshua (b.1882), Eliza (b.1885), Ernest (b.1887), Walter Henry (b.1889) and Ethel (b.1893). The Grainger family lived at 15 Gate Street, Radford in 1881 and at 28 Gate Street in 1891 and 1901. Joshua Grainger, a miner, died at Nottingham, aged 66, in 1915. Maria Grainger died aged 87 in 1941 and was still living at 28 Gate Street. On 23 December 1913, Walter Henry Grainger married Emma Edson at Radford St Peter’s Church. They had one child: Elsie. They lived at 39 Salisbury Street, Radford in 1915 and at 20 Gate Street, Radford Woodhouse in 1917. Walter Grainger's granddaughter, Carole Dyson, notes 'My mother, his only child, was named Elsie and was born on 28/07/15. She suffered polio as a small child and eventually died in a car accident in 1960.' Emma Grainger married James Frederick Parkes in the Basford Registration District in 1921. She died at Nottingham, aged 81, in 1973.
He enlisted at Nottingham on 8 December 1915 and was placed in the Army Reserve only receiving orders to mobilise on 14 July 1917. He was posted to the 44th Bn Sherwood Foresters on 17 July 1917, embarked for France on 18 November and transferred to the 2nd Bn.
Arras Memorial Bay 7 Walter Grainger's granddaughter, Carole Dyson, writes 'We - my family and grandchildren and great grandchildren visited his memorial at Arras last August.'
