William Edward Frankland was the son of Alfred James Frankland and Agnes Shortley who married at Burnley in 1895. Their children included Alfred (b.1896), William Edward (b.1899), Charles Shortley (b.1901) and Isabella (b.1902). They lived at: 7 Hague Terrace, Hague Street, Radford [C.1901]; 9 Ruskin Street, Radford [C.1911 & CWGC]. William Frankland had gone to live in Bradford prior to joining the Army. Alfred James Frankland, who worked as a bricklayer, died at Nottingham aged 91 in 1965. His wife Agnes died at Nottingham aged 84 in 1949.
Private William Edward Frankland, enlisted in Nottingham and initially served with the Sherwood Foresters (165) and later transferred to the 1st Company Army Cyclist Corps, died of wounds on 29th August 1917. He is buried in Lillers Communal Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France, grave reference: V E 11
In memoriam published 30th August 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “FRANKLAND. – In loving memory of our dear son, Private William Frankland, Cyclist, died of wounds August 30th, [sic] 1917. For ever with the Lord. – Loving mother, father, sister, brother, and Alf. (in Italy).” His elder brother, Alfred James Frankland, married Florence Gertrude Elliott on 22nd October 1918. He named his only child, who was born on 28th November 1919, after his late brother, William Edward Frankland.
