Frederick Percy Ellis was the son of James Ellis and Sarah Ellen Bowley who married in the Basford registration district in 1883. Their children included: Thomas Edward (b.1883), John William (b.1888), Ada (b.1892), Hilda (b.1895) and Frederick Percy (b.1899). The addresses of the family homes so far identified: 25 Chapel Street, Radford [C.1891]; 1 Forster Avenue, Radford [C.1901]: 133 Forster Street, Radford [C.1911]; 302 Denman Street, Radford [Army records1916 & 1918]. James Ellis, a fishmonger by trade, died at Nottingham, aged 38, in 1902. His widow then married Henry Wright at Nottingham in 1907. However he died in 1910 so Sarah Ellen Wright was once more a widow at the time of the 1911 census. She died at Nottingham, aged 51, in 1919.
Pte. Ellis enlisted in Nottingham on 14 September 1916 and initially assigned to the Army Service Corps [Service No.299117]; compulsorily transferred to the 3rd East Kent Regiment on 23 November 1917 [Service No.25132]; sent abroad on 24 March 1918; transferred to 2nd/5th Bn. Sherwood Foresters on 30 March 1918 [Service No.102555]; killed in action; as his body was not recovered his name was added to the Ploegsteert Memorial, Hainaut, West Vlaanderen, Belgium.
