Family History

John Ellis was the son of Abraham Ellis and Ellen Scannell who married in the Mile End area of London in 1880. Their children included: David (b.1880), Ellen (b.1885), John (b.1887), James (b.1889/d.1897), Amelia (b.1891), Annie Catherine (b.1893), Joseph (b.1897), Edward Richard (b.1899) and Sarah Hannah (b.1900). The family lived at: Watney Street, Tower Hamlets, London [C.1881]; 24 Fraser Mount, Leeds [C.1891], 90a Norton Street, Radford [C.1901 & C.1911]. Ellen Ellis died at Nottingham, aged 40, in 1901. Her husband, Abraham Ellis, by trade a cigar maker, died in Nottingham, aged 59, in 1915. With both parents dead this would explain why John Ellis told the Army that his brother David was his next-of-kin. One remaining puzzle is where was John Ellis at the time of the 1911 census?

Military History

Pte. Ellis had previously served with the Grenadier Guards; enlisted at Nottingham on 30 March 1916 and was assigned to the 3rd/7th West Riding Riding Regiment; transferred to 1st/6th West Riding Regiment on 1 September 1916; transferred to 10th Bn. West Riding Regiment on 16 October 1916; killed in action; as his body was not recovered his name was added to the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, West Vlaanderen, Belgium.
