William Edson was the son of Henry [Harry] Edson and Clara Varley who married at Nottingham in 1887. Their children included: Florence Mary (b.1890), Gertrude (b.1895), Harold (b.1897), William (b.1899), Herbert (b.1901) and Frederick Charles (b.1903). The children were all born in Radford. Home addresses identified include: 210 Denman Street, Radford [C.1891]; 14 Harold Road, Radford [C.1901 & C.1911]. Henry Edgson was employed as a bobbin and carriage hand. He died at Nottingham, aged 70, in 1933. His widow, Clara, died at Nottingham, aged 72, in 1939.
Pte. Edson enlisted at Nottingham; initially in the Leicestershire Regiment [Service No.49013]; killed in action; buried at Epehy Wood Farm Cemetery, Epehy, Somme, France
Obituary published 14th October 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “EDSON. – Killed in action Sept. 23rd, 1918, (1 )Pte. W. Edson, Cambridgeshire Regt., aged 19 years. When times are bad, and friends are few, dear brother how we long for you; the one we loved but could not save, buried in an unknown grave. – From his sorrowing mother, father, sisters, and brothers, also brother Harold (in France).” (1) All official sources give his date of death as 18th September 1918. In memoriam published 24th September 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “EDSON. – In loving memory of our dear brother, Pte. W. Edson, Cambridgeshire Regt., killed in action September 23rd, 1918. Too dearly loved to be forgotten.
