Andrew Cutts was the son of John Cutts and Mary Taylor who married at Nottingham in 1895. By 1911 they had had ten children, three of whom were alive at the time of the 1911 census. These were: Andrew (b.1895), Maud (b.1904) and Fanny (b.1909). A further five children were born after 1911; Annie (b.1912), John (b.1914), Doris (1917), Albert (1917) and Wallace (b.1923). They lived at 17 Baron Street, Radford [C.1901]; 6 Evelyn Street, Beeston [C.1911]; 48 Cobden Street Radford [n.e.p.1.5.1915 & Army/1917]. John Cutts, a lace maker, died at Nottingham, aged 80, in 1957. His wife, Mary, had predeceased him, dying in Nottingham, aged 64, in 1942.
Andrew Cutts enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) on 28 August 1914 as a special reservist. He was 18 years and 335 days of age and 5 feet 7 inches in height. He was posted to the 1st Battalion and arrived in France on 16 March 1915. He was one of 309 men who joined the battalion at this time to make up for losses during the Battle of Neuve Chapelle. In April 1916 the battalion held the line in the Souchez Valley, having taken over the French. It is likely that Andrew died on the day he was wounded and at the Filed Ambulance based at Hersin. He was later buried in the Hersin Communal Cemetery Extension, grave I.B.6. The war diary stated -" 14th April, Weather showery. Fairly quiet in the morning except for some Rifle Grenading in Solferino (3 casualties). In the afternoon enemy fired a few rounds of shrapnel and H.E., round Rotten Row and neighbouring trenches. Damage slight."
