John Thomas Coulsey was the son of Thomas Coulsey and Rebecca Jane Wade, who married in Grantham in 1873. The Coulseys had twelve children, eleven of whom were alive at the time of the 1911 census. These were: Charlotte Anne (b.1874), Sarah Jane (b.1875), Rebecca (b.1877), Maud Alice (b.1880), David John (b.1882), Robert Edward (b.1884), Charles Wade (b.1886), John Thomas (b.1887), Annie Mary (b.1887), James Arthur (b.1889) and Mabel Emmeline (b.1893). They lived in various places: Langham, near Oakham, Rutland [C.1881]; Cottage, Whaplode, Lincs. [C.1891], Vicarage St Wellingore [C.1901 & C.1911]; 59 Albert Avenue Bobbersmill [Army papers/1916]; the Lodge, Nuthall Road, Bobbersmill [Army papers/1919 & CWGC]. Thomas Coulsey, who had been a brewer’s drayman [C.1881], groom & gardener [C.1891]; domestic gardener [C.1901 & C.1911], died at Nottingham, aged 69 in 1923. His widow, Rebecca Jane, died at Nottingham, aged 82, in 1935.
Enlisted on 24 January 1916; assigned to the 3rd/4th Somerset Light Infantry on 26 February 1916 [Service No.4863]; appointed unpaid Lance Corporal on 28 April 1916; promoted to acting Corporal on 7 June 1916; reverted to Private on 20 October 1916; sent abroad on 2 November 1916; served abroad until 13 February 1917; posted on 24 April 1917 to 3rd Northumberland Fusiliers [Service No.32147]; thereafter remained in the United Kingdom; appointed unpaid Lance Corporal on 30 January 1918; appointed paid Acting Lance Corporal on 22 April 1918; made Lance Corporal 4 April 1919; compulsorily transferred to Royal Army Medical Corps [Exigencies of the Service] 26 April 1919 and reverted to Private; died at the Cambridge Military Hospital, Aldershot of ‘Cavernous Sinus Thrombosis’ on 9 June 1919; buried in Aldershot Military Cemetery, Hampshire.
