Richard Copson was the son of Samuel Copson and Annie Lawson, who married in the Radford registration district in 1873. Their children included: Zibiah (b.1876), Jane (b.1878), George William (b.1881), Emma (b.1883), Samuel (b.1885), Richard (b.1887) and Mary Elizabeth (b.1889). Zibiah was born in Nottingham, the next four in Doncaster, and the rest in Southwell. The family home in Southwell was on Westgate [C.1891 & C.1901]. Annie Copson died at Southwell, aged 53 in 1903. Samuel Copson, by trade a basket weaver, is last sighted in the 1891 census; what subsequently happened to him is unclear. In the 1911 census Richard Copson was living with his sister, Jane, at 5 Aston Terrace, Randal Street, Hyson Green [C.1911]. In 1912 he married Annie Elizabeth Hayes at Nottingham. Their only child, William Ernest (b.1914) was born in Nottingham. A post-war address given for them by the CWGC was 4 Lawrence Street, Radford. The same address was given in the probate index registers for Annie Elizabeth Copson when she died age 33 on 12 March 1923.
Copson volunteered for service and was posted to the King's Liverpool Regiment No. 48684. He was later transferred to the 6th East Lancashire Regiment and was sent out to Egypt. He survived the war only to die a year after its end. He was buried at Port Said War Memorial Cemetery.
His brother Private Samuel Copson, 8856, 1st Royal Scots Fusiliers was killed in action 3 May 1917 and is remembered on the Arras Memorial.
