Albert Edward Bellaby was the son of Harry Bellaby and Matilda Boot, who married at Nottingham in 1884. They had eight children; Harry, born in 1886, William, born in 1891, Mabel, born in 1893, Arthur James, born in 1896, George Edward, born in 1898, Albert Edward, born in 1899, Walter, born in 1902 and Marguerite, born in 1904. All the children were born in Nottingham. Harry Bellaby worked as a brass bobbin maker. He died in 1919. Matilda died in Nottingham in 1933. The family lived at 9 Saville Street, Radford, 3 Woodville Place, Bloomsgrove Street, Radford, 73 Independent Street, Radford and finally 15 Osborne Street, Radford.
Pte. Bellaby was called up for service and trained with 5th Training Reserve Battalion before being posted to 1/5th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. In April 1918 the German ary launched Operation Georgette, which aimed to cut through the British army and capture the Channel ports. There was very heavy fighting before the line was finally stabilised, but on 11/04/1918 Pte. Bellamy was killed in action. His body was not recovered, but his name was commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial.
