William Barker was the son of William James barker and Mary Ann Bamford, who married in Radford in 1876. They had five children; Margaret Ada, born in 1880, Charles, born in 1885, Thomas, born in 1886, William, born in 1890 and Hilda Elsie, born in 1894. All the children were born in Nottingham. The family lived at 5 King Charles Street, Standard Hill, Nottingham, 407 Alfreton Road, Old Radford and finally 291 Radford Boulevard, Radford. William James Barker worked as a commercial traveller, but died in 1893. His widow died in 1929.
In 1911 Barker was serving with 26th Battery, Royal field Artillery, based at Heavitree, Devon. He was later posted to 53rd Battery. He landed in France on 16th August 1914 , he was brought back from France to Trent Bridge Auxiliary Military Hospital where on 25th February 1918 he died. He is buried at Nottingham General Cemetery
In memoriam published 128th February 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BARKER. – On the 25th inst., at military hospital, Gunner William Barker, R.F.A., younger son of the late W. J.
