Family History

William George Banner was the son of William & Emily Banner. Their other children were: Emily Elizabeth, born in 1893, Elizabeth, born in 1895, Bertha, born in 1899, Herbert, born in 1902 and John, born in 1906. All were born in Nottingham. The family lived at 23 Vane Street, Radford Woodhouse, Nottingham. William Banner was a coal miner, and died in 1929.

Military History

Pte. Banner was called up for service and following training he was drafted to France. The battalion was involved in fighting during the Battle of the Somme. On 03/09/1916 the battalion attacked from trenches to the south of Beaumont Hamel, though they took the German front line they were eventually forced to withdraw, having suffered 454 casualties, including Pte. Banner who was seriously wounded. He was taken down the line to a hospital in Boulogne, but died of his injuries on 21/09/1916. He was buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery.
