Family History

George Cawthorn was born in 1895 he was the son of William Charles a miller and his first wife the late Mary Ann Cawthorn née Sylvester of Upwell Road, March. William Charles was born in 1870 at Pinchbeck, Mary Ann Sylvester was born in 1869 at Spilsby, she died in 1907 aged 38 yrs they were married on 14th March 1892 and went on to have 10 children. Following the death of his first wife William Charles married Elizabeth Redhead Stacey (born 1880 in March, Cambridgeshire,) they were married on 11th February 1907 and had 5 further children. In 1911 the family are living at Upwell Road, March , William Charles is 41 yrs of age and is a miller he is living with his second wife Elizabeth 31 yrs and 9 of his children including George 16 yrs a farm servant and William 15 yrs a farm servant.

Military History

Private George Cawthorn enlisted at Wisbech, he served with the 1/1st battalion Cambridgeshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 27th May 1917 and is buried at Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery Grave Reference: VII B 14

Extra Information

His younger brother William Cawthorn also served in the 'Great War' he served with the service number 42775 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 20th October 1917 and is buried at at Gouvey Farm near Boesinghe, Belgium. Commemorated : Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium. Panel 99 to 102 and 162 to 162A. He is not shown on the Nottinghamshire roll of honour.
