He was an intelligent boy who attended Whitwood Techncal and Mining College to train as a pit manager. He had a greyhound called 'Tab' which he forlornly hoped would win money.

Family history

He was the son of Samuel, a miner and Emma Louisa Martin, of Cutsyke, Castleford. They had twelve chidren. His girlfriend Molly remembered him as a 'smashing lad' whose final words to her were 'Always remember that I love you.'
