He loved music and could memorise it by ear before playing it for his young cousins could dance. 'In the Mood' was a particular favourite. He was patient with children and was said to have been 'full of life, fun and mischief'.

His great paasion was horses and he worked as a stable boy to finance his two ponies on which he competed in local shows.

Family history

He was the son of John, a main line engine driver and Margaret Mercer, of Southport. They had three sons and two daughters.

He brought his two crewmates Rathbone and Emerson home for what turned out to be their last Christmas in 1944
