He was keen on Basketball, bowling, tennis and skating. He was a practical man whose skills included electrical wiring, plumbing and carpentry.

He was employed as a motorman and also a trolley bus operator in Vancouver before enlisting.

He seems to have been accident prone suffering repeated injuries particularly durin rugby games.

Family history

He was the son of John Eymundson Emerson and Jean Beatrice Emerson, of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; husband of Phyllis Emerson. John's father was born in Iceland, his mother in England. He had two sisters.

Air Bomber

At Air Observer Sschool, where he flew Avro Ansons he was described as 'carefree with ability but careless in dress' and a 'garrulous fellow'. He was also on record as being 'an excellent Air Bomber' who would have nade 'an average pilot' but who wished to be a navigator.

He embarked for England in November 1943, was promoted to Flight Sergeant in August 1944 before transfer with his crew to 1669 OTU at Langar on 20th October. Finally, after his 30th birthday, he was posted to 5 LFS at Syerston.
