Navigator
The RAF found him a keen hard working tea-totaller. Awarded his navigator's badge on 23rd December 1943, Hugh was posted to 20 OTU at Abingdon in mid-June 1944 where he met his crew and was promoted to Flight Sergeant. In September he was posted to 1669 OTU at Langar and thence to 5 LFS Syerston on 17th December 1944.
Hugh's sister Margaret adored him and painted his portrait. Hugh's older brother Donald missed him so much that he used toread Hugh's log book to feel connected to him. Hugh's mother saw her other three sons return safely from the war but she never recovered from the loss of Hugh.
