Patrick was an apprentice toolmaker at the Gaslighting Coke Company in Beckton. He enjoyed making balsa models of aircraft and there were dozens of them pinned to his bedroom ceiling. He was an excellent dacncer.

Family history

Patrick was the son of Charles and Mary Ellen Browne, of Barking. Patrick was the youngest of five children. He was remembered as a devout Catholic who was an altar server at SSt Mary and St Ethelburger church, Barking. One friend recalled a 'quiet, clean-cut young man with a ready smile, soft voice and a great sense of humour'.

Patrick enlisted aged 18 worried the war would end before he had an opportunity to become involved. He became a Flight Engineer.
