He was educated at Winchester House Repton where he was Head Boy in 1928 and again in 1933. He then went to Emmanuel College Cambridge where he graduated with Honours in Mechanical Sciences. He was President of the university Engineering Society i 1936. He also joined the university Air Squadron.

After university, he was apprenticed for 5 years at Metropolitan Vickers Electrical Co. Ltd before moving to Furse Ltd Nottingham in 1938.

He was a member of Nottingham's Borough Club and the Junior Chamber of Commerce.

He was the son of William Francis and Edith Sarah Furse of Pelham Lodge, Ruddington.
