He was the son of Frederick Richard and Sarah Ann Smith, of 32, Whitwell Road, Broxtowe, Nottingham. George Frederick was oldest of their twelve children. The others being Doreen, John, Iris May, Joseph, Thomas, Margaret, Beryl, Freda, Trevor, Barbara and Sandra.

He volunteered for naval service in December 1939 and joined the crew of HMS Hood on April 29th 1940.
