He was the son of Frederick Richard and Sarah Ann Smith, of 32, Whitwell Road, Broxtowe, Nottingham. George Frederick was oldest of their twelve children. The others being Doreen, John, Iris May, Joseph, Thomas, Margaret, Beryl, Freda, Trevor, Barbara and Sandra.
