Alan Hogg took his own life at Chatham Barracks whist undergoing Royal Marines training. He had suffered a bullet wound to the head and was discovered with his rifle across his legs. There was no possibility of foul play. Hogg's father was both heartbroken and mystified; on Edward's last leave, he told the Chatham coroner, he offered to make Edward a partner post-war in his milk business. 'Alan replied "No, no dairying for me. Give me the Marines." He was a happy boy.' Pronouncing a suicide verdict whilst the balance of his mind was disturbed, the coroner concluded 'there must have been something that was disturbing Hogg's mind.'
