John William Noble was born in 1897 at Potter Hill, he was the son of Thomas a farmer and Elizabeth Ann Noble née Booth of 154 Sandsfield Lane Gainsborough. His father Thomas was born in 1850 at Girton, his mother Elizabeth Ann Booth was born in 1863 at Balderton they were married on 26th December 1892, they had 10 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood, their children were, Ann Elizabeth b1896, John William b1897, Alice Mary b1899, Thomas Edward b1900, Bertha Jane b1901, George b1903, Agnes b1905 and Alfred b1907 all were born at Potter Hill. in the 1911 census the family are living at Swinethorpe and are shown as Thomas 61 yrs a farmer, he is living with his wife Ann Elizabeth 48 yrs and their children, Ann Elizabeth 15 yrs no occupation, John William 14 yrs no occupation, Alice Mary 12 yrs, Thomas Edward 11 yrs, Bertie Jane 10 yrs, George 8 yrs, Agnes 6 yrs and Alfred 4 yrs of age.

Military History

Private John William Noble enlisted at Lincoln whilst residing at Harby, he served with the 2/6th battalion South Staffordshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 23rd May 1917, he is buried at Bellicourt British Cemetery Grave Reference: II C 3
