Family History

John William Medley was born in 1892 at Osgodby and was the son of John a farm baliff and Elizabeth Ann Medley née Lowery of Swinethorpe Harby Newark. His father John was born in 1863 at West Rasen, Lincolnshire his mother Ann Elizabeth Lowery was born in 1867 at Binbrook, they were married in 1885 at Caistor and went on to have 12 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood, their children were, Charles b1881 Osgodby, Elizabeth b1887 Osgodby, Alicia b1890 Osgodby, John William b1892 Osgodby, Albert b1896 Caenby, Arthur Russell b1898 Caenby Bertha Lowery b1901 Claxby, Edward b1902 Claxby, Herbert b1906 Rothwell and Joseph b1908 Swinethorpe. In the 1911 census John William has left the family home and is a boarder living at Horncastle Road, Bardney, Lincolnshire he is shown as 19 yrs a horseman on a farm, he is living with William Parkinson 53 yrs a farm foreman and his family. in the same 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at Swinthorpe, Eagle and are shown as John 48 yrs a farm baliff he is living with his wife Anne Elizabeth 43 yrs and their children, Albert 15 yrs a scholar, Arthur Russell 13 yrs a scholar, Bertha Lowery 9 yrs a scholar, Edward 8 yrs a scholar, Herbert 5 yrs and Joseph 3 yrs of age.

Military History

Lance Corporal John William Medley enlisted at Lincoln whilst residing at Eagle, he initially served with the service number 3243 in the Lincolnshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 4th May 1917 whilst serving with the 2nd battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
