George Albert Bayes was born in 1894 at Willingham and was the son of George a farm foreman and Sarah Jane Bayes née Williams, of Potter Hill Farm, North Collingham, Newark. His father George was born in 1870 at Willingham and his mother Sarah Jane Williams was born in 1872 at Skellingthorpe, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Gainsborough registration district, they went on to have the following children, Emma b1893 Wilingham, George Albert b1894 Willingham, John Henry b1895 Hemswell, William Hucknall b1899 Hemswell, Frances May b1900 Hemswell, Leonad b1901 Hemswell. Arthur b1902 Hemswell, Eleanor b1904 Hemswell, Phoebe Irene b1907 Doddington, Clementine Della b1909 Doddington, Vera b1912 Doddington, Norman b1912 Doddington and Evelyn b1913 Doddington. In the 1911 census the family are living at Birch Spring farm, Harby and were shown as George 41 yrs a farm foreman, he is living with his wife Sarah Jane 39 yrs and their children, George Albert 17 yrs a farm servant, William Hucknall 12 yrs a scholar, Frances May 11 yrs a scholar, Arthur 9 yrs a scholar, Leonard 9 yrs a scholar, Eleanor 7 yrs, Phoebe Irene 4 yrs and Clementine Della 2 yrs old.
Lance Corporal George Albert Bayes enlisted at Lincoln whilst residing at Harby he served with the 2/5th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment . He was killed in action on 26th September 1917 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
