Family History

Edward was born in 1894 in Nottingham and was the youngest son of Joseph, a ropemaker, and his wife Emily/Emma Greenberry née Fram. His father Joseph was born in Nottingham in 1853 and his wife Emily Fram was also born in 1853 in Nottingham. Their marriage is recorded in the Nottingham Registration district in 1870. They went on to have 12 children, sadly six of whom were to die in infancy prior to 1911, the children recorded on the census 1891-1911 include:- Lavinina b1873, Emily b1874, Annie b1876, Joseph b1878, Thomas b1882, Henry b1884, Ada b1187, Mabel b1889, Jane b1891 and Edward b1894. His father Joseph died in Nottingham in 1898 aged 43 yrs, leaving Emily a widow to bring up their large family. In the 1911 census the family are living at 77 Great Alfred Street, Nottingham, only Emily (Emma on the census) 58 yrs and a widow is living at the address with her two youngest children, Mabel 24 yrs a blouse machinist and Edward 17 yrs a beer bottle filler.

Military History

Edward Greenberry, enlisted in Nottingham and served with 2nd Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment. He disembarked in France with his battalion on 8th September 1914 and a year later on 9th August 1915 he was killed in action. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.

Nottingham Post notice (abridged) 28 Sept 1915: 'Corporal E Greenberry, 2nd Sherwood Foresters, late Alfred Street South, Nottingham, killed in action August 9, age 21.' Nottingham Post notice, 9 August 1916: ‘Greenberry. To the sweetest memory of our dear brother, Corporal E Greenberry, Sherwood Foresters, who was killed in action, August 9th 1915.
