Ernest Goddard was born on 8th February 1890 in Lowdham and was baptised on 25th February 1890 in St Marys Church, Lowdham he was the son of William and Mary Goddard nee Paling of Main Street, Lowdham. His father William was born in 1851 at Lowdham , his mother Mary Paling was born in 1848 also at Lowdham she died on 2nd March 1911, they were married in 1874 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell Registration district, they had the following children, Clara b1878, Violet b1880, Kate b1883 Willie b1885, Ernest b1890, Winifred Sybil b1893 all were born in Lowdham. In the 1911 census the family are living at Lowdham and are shown as William 59 yrs a widow a foreman platelayer for the Midland Railway, he is living with his children, Willie 25 yrs a seed mans assistant, Ernest 21 yrs a nursery gardener and Winifred Sybil 17 yrs of age no occupation listed. He died in Pentrepoeth on 18th October from Pulmonary Tuberculosis, aged 30 yrs, he was gassed during the Great War
Private Ernest Goddard enlisted on 3rd September 1914, he served with the 3rd battalion South Wales Borders. He landed in France on 5th September 1915 and was discharged from the Army on 4th September 1918 no longer fit for war service and was awarded a Silver War Badge number 15965. He was living at Pentrepoe, Monmouthshire at the time of discharge. He died on 18th October 1920 of tuberculosis and is buried at Lowdham St Marys churchyard.
His medal card bears an address in Newport.
