Family History

John Henry was the son of Henry and Elizabeth Martin (née Wright). His father Henry was born in Newark, Nottinghamshire, the son of Henry and Jane Elizabeth Martin (née Hare). Henry snr. was born in Bassingham, Lincolnshire, and Elizabeth Jane in 1839 in Boothby Pagnell, Lincolnshire, and they were married in Boothby Pagnall parish church on 31 May 1859. Henry and Jane had ten children, including Henry, of whom eight were still living in 1911. In 1871 the Martin family was living in South Collingham, Nottinghamshire, but by 1881 Henry (19) a domestic gardener was living at the Gardener's House, Newstead Abbey, Nottinghamshire, a lodger in the household of the head gardener, John Standing Belliss, and his family. Henry married Elizabeth Wright in 1888 (O/N/D Boston). Their son John Henry was born in 1890 (A/M/J Boston) and baptised at Skirbeck St Nicholas on 6 July 1890. Elizabeth died shortly after and in 1891 John Henry and his widowed father were living at Gibbeter, Cut Throat Lane, Skirbeck. John Henry, a gardener, employed a housekeeper, Fanny Stephenson (61) a widow. John's father has not yet been traced after 1891 but by 1901 John was living with his paternal grandparents, Henry and Jane, on Newark Road, South Collingham. His grandfather was a gardener. In 1911 Henry (76), a pensioned groom and gardener, and Jane (62) were living in Lincoln Grove, Cropwell Road, Radcliffe on Trent, with two of their daughters Sarah Ann (47) a children's nurse and Edith (30) a milliner on her own account, and their grandson John Henry, a Poor Law clerk for the Board of Guardians and Rural District Council. John Henry named his grandmother as his legatee. The CWGC record does not name his grandparents but his father: 'Son of Henry Martin, of Boston, Lincs.'

Military History

Private John Henry Martin attested: 13th October 1914, Northallerton, Yorks, age 24; and served with the 4th Reserve battalion Yorkshire Regiment, Territorial Force. He entered theatre on 18 April 1915 (area not specified on Medal Roll index card). He was discharged from the Army on 15th November 1916 and died on 26th December 1916 from meningitis at 1st Southern General Hospital, Edgbaston, he is buried in Radcliffe on Trent Cemetery, Nottinghamshire (grave ref. B.E.114). He qualified for the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
