Cyril Varley

Cyril Varley was born in 1891 in Riddings, Derbyshire and was the son of Joseph a coal miner and Mary Varley née Peach of 31 Belvidere Street, Mansfield. His father Joseph was born in 1859 in Alfreton, Derbyshire and his mother Mary Ann Peach was born in 1861 also in Alfreton, they were married in 1877, their marriage was recorded in the Belper Registration District, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 4 of whom were to died in infancy or early childhood prior to 1911, their children were Isaac b1878 Riddings, Rosanna b1885 Somercotes, Cyril 1891 Riddings, Harriet 1893 Riddings, Martha Ann b1897 Mansfield, Joe b1900 Mansfield In the 1911 census Cyril is living as a boarder at 22 Colliery Row, Whitwell , he is 19 yrs of age and a coal miner/hewer he is living with John Slater 30 yrs a coal miner and his wife and children. Meanwhile on the same census we find his family living at 31 Belvidere Street, Mansfield and are shown as Joseph 53 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 51 yrs and their children, Harriett 17 yrs a skinner cotton doubling, Martha Ann 14 yrs a hosiery mender and Joe 1 yr. He married Annie Maria Chesterton (a widow ) on 13th April 1914 at St Nicholas Church, Nottingham she brought a child to the marriage, Bernard Chesterton born 12th October 1910 and they went on to have two further children Cyril Varley born 3rd November 1914 and Annie Varley born 12th April 1916, they lived at 16 Finkhill Street, Nottingham His widow Annie Maria received a letter from the War Office dated 15th January 1917 informing her that she would be paid a pension of 20 shillings and sixpence in respect of her and her three children with effect from 16th January 1917. She later remarried to become Annie Maria Commander and lived at 35, Netherfield Lane, Welbeck New Village, Warsop
