Family History

John George was born in 1885 in Shardlow, Derbyshire and was the son of George an engine man and Harriett Shardlow, née Plackett. His father George was born in 1855 in Shardlow and his mother Harriett Plackett was born in 1858 also in Shardlow, they were married in Shardlow in 1877 and went on to have 7 children who were all born in Shardlow, they were :- Elizabeth b1878, James b1880, Eliza b1882, John b1885, Annie b1887, George b1890 and Edward b1893. John married Clara Morris who was born in 1888 in Tyldesley, Lancashire at Nottingham in 1907 , they went on to have a son John George Sidney b1909 in Nottingham. In the 1911 census he and his family are living at 5 Orchard Street, Grey Friar Gate, Nottingham he is shown as being 26 yrs, head of the family a hotel porter, he is living with his wife Clara 23 yrs and son John George Sidney 2 yrs.

Military History

Private John George Upton enlisted in Nottingham, he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters, he was killed in action at 'The Bluff' in a mine explosion that preceded the German assault, on 14th February 1916. He is buried at Bedford House Cemetery , Belgium, Enclosure No.4 VII. AA. 29.
