George William Marriott

George William was the son of Frederick and Sarah Ann Marriott (nee Crofts). Frederick was born in Nottingham in 1852 (A/M/J Nottingham) and Sarah in Bunny, Nottinghamshire. They were married in 1878 (A/M/J Nottingham). They had six children of whom only five were still living at the time of the 1901 Census: George William (b. 1879 A/M/J), Annie (1880 O/N/D), Ethel (birth registered 1884 J/F/M), Emma (b. 1885 A/M/J) and Frederick (birth registered 1892 J/F/M); all the births were registered in Nottingham. In 1881 Frederick (28), a house painter, and Sarah Ann (27) were living at 44 Truman Street, St Ann's, with their children George (2) and Annie (5 months). By 1891 the family was living at 38 St James' Street, Nottingham, in the parish of St Nicholas. Frederick was working as a grocer. His wife Sarah and their four children George (12), Annie (10), Ethel (7) and Emma (6) were at home on the night of the census. Also in the household was a general servant, Nelly Maud Upton (19). Frederick died in 1896 (death registered A/M/J Nottingham), about four years after the birth of his youngest son, also named Frederick. Frederick's widow, Sarah, took over the grocery business as in 1901 she was listed on the census as head of household and her occupation given as grocer and provision dealer. All five of her children were still living at home: George, who was a grocer in the family business, Annie an apron machinist, Ethel who was a worker at home, and Emma and Frederick who were still at school. Also in the household was Sarah's widowed father, George Crofts (74, b. Bunny), a retired farm labourer. Two years later in 1903 George married Mary Stubbs (marriage registered A/M/J Nottingham). His mother gave up the business some time before 1911 as by the time of the census she was living at 37 Beauvale Road, Meadows, and was not following any occupation. Also in her household were Ethel (27) and Emma (26) who were both blouse machinists and Frederick (19) who was a clerk. George (32), a grocer, was still living at 38 James' Street in 1911 along with his wife, Mary (31) and their daughter Phyllis May (6, b. 1904). It is likely that one or more of George's siblings emigrated to Canada after the war and there is also a record of their niece, Phyllis, visiting Canada. Phyllis probably died unmarried on 21 November 1978 at the age of 74; she was then living at 139 Julian Road, West Bridgford.
