Family History

Henry Hurst known as Harry was born in 1891 at Nottingham, he was the son of Henry Benjamin Bills Hurst an Iron Turner and the late Agnes Hurst née Wilkinson of 2 Ethel Grove, Nottingham. Henry Benjamin Hills was born in 1855 at Radford, Agnes Wilkinson was born in 1860 at Nottingham, she died in 1915 aged 55 yrs they were married on 25th December 1875 at St Mary’s Church, Nottingham, they went on to have 8 children. In the 1911 census the family are living at 2 Ethel Grove, Nottingham, Henry Benjamin is 54 yrs and is an iron turner, he is living with his wife Agnes 51 yrs and two of their children, Daniel 25 yrs a brass bobbin hand and Benjamin 16 yrs of age.

Military History

Gunner Harry Hurst enlisted on 6th April 1907 at Nottingham, giving his age as 18 yrs and 3 months his occupation is that of a general labourer, He served with the Royal Field Artillery and was posted to the reserves on 5th April 1913. He was mobilised for war on 6th August 1914 and landed in France on 22nd August 1914 where he served until 16th October 1915 when he was returned to England. On 20th January 1915 he was discharged due to wounds he had received and Tuberculosis and found unfit for further military service. He died on 21st March 1916 and is buried at Nottingham Church Cemetery.
