Tom Straw was born on 21st May 1889 at Lowdham and was the son of William a nursery labourer and Ann Straw of Lambley Lane Lowdham, His father William was born in 1851 at Lowdham and his mother Ann was born in 1852 at Sneinton, they were married prior to 1873 and had the following children, John Thomas b1873, Ada b1877, Fred William b1879, Charles b1882, Arthur b1885, Alice Ann b1889, Tom b1889 and Mary Lizzie b1893 all were born in Lowdham. His father William died on 22nd July 1904 he was aged 53 yrs. In the 1911 census the family are living at Lowdham and are shown as Ann 59 yrs a widow and charwoman, she is living with her children Tom 21 yrs a nursery gardener, Mary Lizzie 18 yrs a domestic day girl, also living at the address with them is Mabel Straw 4 yrs a granddaughter. Tom Straw married his wife Ada Hempsall (born 18th September 1891 at Swinderby) on 25th September 1913 at Swinderby, Lincolnshire, they lived at Watson's Cottages, Main Street, Lowdham. Following his death his widow lived with her mother in Swinderby and later at Mansfield Nottinghamshire.
Gunnery Tom Straw attested on 9th December 1915 at Lowdham, he gave his age as 26 yrs and 7 months, his address was Watson's cottage, Main Street, Lowdham, he stated his occupation was that of a nursery gardener his next of kin was his wife Ada of the same address. He was posted to the reserves the following day. Mobilised for war on 5th June 1916 he was posted to the Royal Garrison Artillery Depot as a gunner. On 11th October 1916 he was posted to the 258 siege battery and on 9th February 1917 landed in France. He was posted to the 145th Siege Battery on 22nd February 1917 and was killed in action on 24th April 1917 and is buried at Bailleul Road East Cemetery, St Laurent-Blangy, Pas de Calais, France. 1.G.6
