Harold Simms was born on 4th March 1894 at Lowdham, he was baptised on 1st April 1894 at St Mary Church Lowdham, he was the son of John William a general labourer and Emma Simms of Ton Lane, Lowdham. His father John William was born in 1868 at Coddington and his mother Emma Chapman was born in 1867 at Lowdham, they were married on 18th March 1890 at St Marys Church, Lowdham, they went on to have 4 children. sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, Elsie b1891, Harold b1894 and Albert Edward b1896, all were born at Lowdham. In the 1911 census the family are living at Lowdham and were shown as John William 42 yrs a general labourer, he is living with his wife Emma 44 yrs and their children, Elsie 20 yrs no occupation is listed, Harold 17 yrs a picture framer and Albert Edward 15 yrs a general labourer
Private Harold Simms enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Lowdham, he initially served with the service number 4767 and renumbered 266474 in the Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment). He was serving with the 1st battalion Essex Regiment when he was killed in action on 8th October 1918. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Vis en Artois Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
In memoriam published 8th October 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “SIMMS. — In loving memory of Pte. Harold Simms, Lowdham, 1st Essex Regt., who died of wounds October 8th, 1918.
