Clarence Sampson Pitchford was born in 1897 in Graverley Hill, Birmingham and was the son of Alfred a publican and Hannah Ethel Pitchford née Goodwin of 5 Gill Street, Nottingham. His father Alfred was born in 1874 in Hadley, Shropshire and his mother Hannah Ethel Goodwin was born in 1871 in Birmingham, they were married in 1892 in Birmingham and went on to have 7 children , sadly 1 died in infancy their surviving children were Bertram Oran b1893 Graverley Hill, Arthur Jabez b1895 Graverley Hill, Clarence Sampson b1897 Graverley Hill, Harold Leslie b1898 Graverley Hill, Aubrey Reginald b 1902 Newport Staffordshire and Violet Patricia b1907 Stafford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 45 Cooper Street, Nottingham and are shown as Alfred 37 yrs a publican, he is living with his wife Ethel 40 yrs and their children, Bertram Oran 18 yrs a presser, Arthur Jabez 16 yrs an errand boy, Clarence Sampson 14 yrs a designer, Harold Leslie 13 yrs a scholar, Aubrey Reginald 9 yrs a scholar and Violet Patricia 4 yrs.
Private Clarence Sampson Pitchford, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 13th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, was killed in action on 11th April 1917. Having no known grave, he is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
All Saints Church News, August 1919: 'The following have not previously been reported in the “Church News”. The sympathy of the Church goes out to the bereaved. Clarence Pitchford, 5 Gill Street, Rifleman KRR; killed in action April 11th 1917, at Arras; age 20.' In memoriam published 11th April 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- PITCHFORD. – In loving memory of our dear son, Clarence Pitchford, late of 68, Berrill-road, Sherwood-rise, who fell in action in France, April 11th, 1917, aged 20 years.
