Family History

Bertie Roberts was born on 6th April 1885 and was baptised on 15th April 1885 at St Marys Church, Lowdham and was the son of William a frame work knitter and Harriett Roberts née Glazebrook they lived at Ton Lane, Lowdham. His father William was born in 1856 in Lowdham and his mother Harriett Glazebrook was born in 1852 also in Lowdham, they were married in 1879 , their marriage was recorded in the Southwell Registration District and went on to have 4 children , two of whom died in infancy or early childhood, their other surviving child was Richard William born 1880 also in Lowdham. In the 19111 census the family are living at Ton Lane, Lowdham and are shown as William 55 yrs a frame work knitter, he is living with his wife Harriett 59 yrs and their son Bertie 25 yrs a platelayer for the midland railway.

Military History

Private Bertie Roberts enlisted at Lowdham and served with the 8th battalion South Staffordshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 5th January 1918 and is buried at Hermies Hill British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France, grave reference 1.F.27
