James Maxwell was born in 1884 at Liverpool. He married Annie Maria Tucker in 1907 in Nottingham, they lived at Sunbeam Terrace, Peveril Street, Nottingham they had the following children, James Frederick born 25th October 1907, Catherine May born 3rd January 1909 Eric William born 28th January 1913 and Leslie born 1914. In 1911 the family are living at 3 Crewe Terrace, Norton Street, Nottingham and are shown as James 27 yrs a chair maker he is living with his wife Annie 24 yrs and their children James 3 yrs and Catherine 2 yrs.
Private James Maxwell, enlisted in Nottingham on 21st June 1909 for 4 years service in the territorial army, he served with the 1/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment (Robin Hood Rifles). Following the outbreak of war he was embodied for service on 5th August 1914. He landed in France on 28th February 1915. He died of wounds in No. 10 Casualty Clearing Station on 30th July 1915 and is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium grave reference III A 6A
In memoriam published 28th July 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- MAXWELL. – In loving memory of my dear husband, Pte. James Maxwell, Sherwood Foresters (Robin Hoods), died of wounds in France, July 28th, 1915, aged 30 years. He bravely answered duty's call, and died that we might live. – Wife and children.” In memoriam published 28th July 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “MAXWELL. – In loving remembrance of Private James Maxwell, Sherwood Foresters, died of wounds July 28th, 1915.
