Will Mason was born in 1896 the son of William a lace maker and Mary Ann Mason née Chambers. His father was born in 1869 in Nottingham and his mother Mary Ann Chambers was born in 1867 also in Nottingham. Married in 1891, they had five children - Florence b.1892, William Joseph b.1893, George b1895, William b.1896 and Tom b.1900. In 1911, the family lived at 30, Kenilworth Terrace, Portland Road, Nottingham. Florrie was a hosiery machinist and George a lace warehouseman.

His older brother, Private George Mason, 1/7th Bn Sherwood Foresters, was also killed (15/11/1915). Nottingham Post obituary (abridged) 11 July 1917: MASON killed by shell June 17th, Private Will Mason RAMC, age 21, son of W and MA Mason, 30 Kenilworth Terrace. War obituary, All Saints Church News, August 1917: 'Will Mason, 30 Kenilworth Terrace, Private RAMC, aged 21, after preliminary RAMC training he went on hospital duty at Dover and was there about a year, transferred to field service June 1917 and killed by a shell June 17th. Attended All Saints Sunday School regularly for many years gaining many prizes and certificates including one for 10 years full attendance, a member of the choir, confirmed and a communicant. The second son of the family to be lost in the war.'
