Charles Harold Hopewell (junior) was born in 186 at Nottingham and was the son of Charles (senior) a coach builder and his first wife the late Harriet Hopewell née Pollard of Nottingham. His father Charles was born in 1857 at Nottingham, his mother Harriett Pollard was born in 1858 also at Nottingham she died in 1901 aged 43 yrs, they were married in 1883 at Nottingham and went on to have the following children, Harry b1884, Charles b1886, Lily b1891 and Gertrude b1893 all were born in Nottingham, In 1901 the family lived at 14 Hedderley Street, Union Road, Nottingham. Following his mothers death in 1901 his father went on to re marry Elizabeth Peet in 1904 at Nottingham. Charles Harold married his wife Davis (born 3rd May 1887) in 1906 at Nottingham, they lived at 21 Stoneleigh Terrace, Nottingham and went on to have the following children, Grace born 13th August 1906, Lily born 6th November 1907, Gertrude born 21st February 1910 and Winifred born 24th January 1913. In the 1911 census they lived at 21 Chaucer Terrace, Chaucer Street, Nottingham. and are shown as Charles Henry 25 yrs a lace manufacturers assistant, he is living with his wife Eliza Ann 20 yrs a lace pattern girl, and their children, Grace 4 yrs, Lily 3 yrs and Gertrude 1 year of age. The notice of Charles' death in the local paper in July 1915 gave his address as 21 Stoneleigh Terrace, Portland Road, Nottingham.
Private Charles Harold Hopewell enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 7th July 1915 by a sniper and is buried in Potijze Burial Ground Cemetery (grave ref. B1.22).
Nottingham Evening Post, ‘Roll of Honour’, 31 July 1915: ‘Hopewell. Killed by sniper, July 7th, Private Chas H. Hopewell, 2nd Sherwood Foresters, of 21, Stoneleigh-terrace, Portland-road, aged 29 years. He gave his life for others.’ (www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk)
