Family History

William Thomas Lodge was baptised on 6th May 1888 at St Marys Church Radcliffe on Trent, he was the only son of Thomas a railway signalman and Emma Lodge née Kelly of Bingham Road, Radcliffe on Trent. Thomas was born in 1853 and Emma Kelly was born in 1856 both were born in Cann Dorset they were married on 8th May 1887 at Shaftsbury, Dorset William Thomas married Gertrude Beatrice Roberts (born 10th December 1887 at Hucknall) they were married on 3rd September 1910 at Shirebrook they lived at 113 Station Road, Shirebrook. In 1911 the family is living at Harlequin, Radcliffe on Trent and are shown as Thomas 58 yrs a railway signalman, he is living with his wife Emma 55 yrs and his son William Thomas 22 yrs a joiner and his wife Gertrude Beatrice 23 yrs. Commencing 17th March 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week. His widow re married in 1919 to Harry Tyson, they lived at 113 Station Road, Shirebrook.

Military History

Private William Thomas Lodge attested on 12th December 1915 at Shirebrook, he gave his age as 27 yrs and 8 months, his occupation as that of a coal miner and his address as 15 Warren Terrace, Shirebrook. Mobilised on 5th July 1917 he was posted to the Sherwood Foresters and joined at the Derby Depot. He landed at Calais on 1st November 1917 and joined the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He was gassed on 15th August 1918 and admitted to the Military hospital at Rouen where on 9th September 1918 he died of his wounds and is buried in St Sever cemetery extension Rouen, RII P8
