Family History

Charles was the second son of William and Rosamond Haslam (née Cox). William and Rosamond were married in 1884. Rosamond, who had been born in Upton, near Southwell, was a housemaid in the household of Rev John Brown, the vicar of Lowdham, before her marriage. William was a wheelwright and joiner, who lived and worked in Lowdham. They lived on Main Street, Lowdham, and had four children; Thomas, Charles, Arthur William and Mary Marella. Thomas and Charles followed in their father's trade as a wheelwright/joiner while their younger brother, Arthur, became a builder. An army document records that Charles' sole legatee was his widow, Eliza, and there is a record of a marriage registered in Nottinghamshire between Charles Haslam and Eliza Leeson in 1914 (Jul/Aug/Sep). His pension record card shows his widow to be Eliza Haslam born 10th November 1888 and her address was 34 Thurgarton Street, Sneinton and later The Rambles, Old Colwick. Charles' mother died on 10 February 1922 aged 59 and his father on 30 December 1933 aged 75. Probate: 'Haslam William of Lowdham Nottinghamshire died 30 December 1933 Probate Nottingham 5 June [1934] to Thomas Haslam wheelwright Arthur William Haslam builder and Robert Claude Smith solicitors managing clerk.
