Family History

George Frederick Thompson was born on 20th August 1899 at Hawksworth and was the son of William Edward a cowman on a farm and Mary Thompson née Kemp, of Manor Farm Cottage, Clifton, Nottingham. His father William Edward was born in 1864 at Bassingham, Lincolnshire his mother Mary Kemp was born in 1865 at Thoroton, they were married in 1883 their marriage was recorded in the Bingham registration district, they went on to have the following children, Maria b1885 Aslockton, Emma b1886 Aslockton, Thomas b1891 Whatton, George Frederick b1899 Hawksworth, Lilly b1902 Hawksworth, Eva b1906 Hawksworth and Ethel b 1908 Hawksworth. In the 1911 census the family are living at Hoe Hill Farm Hawksworth and are shown as William Edward 47 yrs a cowman on a farm, he is living with his wife Mary 46 yrs and their children, Emma 25 yrs no occupation listed, Thomas 20 yrs a farm servant, George 11 yrs a scholar, Lilly 9 yrs a scholar, Eva 5 yrs and Ethel 3 yrs. ,

Military History

Private George Frederick Thompson attested on 19th May 1917 at Nottingham, giving his age as 17 yrs 272 days, his address as Hoe Hill Farm, Plumbtree and his occupation as farm servant. He was posted to the reserves. On 9th April 1918 he was mobilised for war, he was now 18 yrs and 9 months old, he was posted to the 5th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 24th October 1918 and was wounded in action on 7th November 1918, he died from his wounds at the 30th casualty clearing station on 8th November 1918. He is buried in Premont British Cemetery grave reference 2.E.12
